I might be leaving for Air Force Basic training in a month or two. I really suck at pushups, am I screwed?

I’ve been working on them, but my arms are so weak. Will they get me to where I need to be or am I doomed? I need to know ways to strengthen my arms and muscles to do good pushups.

Also, I’m 15 pounds under my max weight, but what if I gain a lot of muscle in basic and that puts me over my max? what would happen?

and for females in basic, do they let you take care of your female issues every month, even if they’re at the drop of a dime? cuz sometimes those things are unpredictable. Do they have you store your women’s products in the bathroom or do they just let you run back to the racks every time you need? cuz i know you are so busy during the day. \

any advice would be appreciated. mature answers only please.

You must be kidding…I guess nobody told you that AF basic is a cup cake drill.

The key is repetition. Do them on your knees so that it’s easier. Do 10 at a time. Do 10 of them 10 times each day. In a month you can do them on your toes. Continue with 10 at a time, 10 times per day.

Don’t listen to that guy…I had the same questions because I’m about to join too. But some people told me you would be so stressed out that sometimes girls wouldn’t even have them. But it also works differently for every girl. I’m bad at pushups too, but you only need to do a certain amount at the beginning of basic and hopefully you work yourself up to it. I dont’ think they’ll expect us to be able to do 30 pushups at the very beginning although it IS very helpful. I don’t really want to stand out so I’m going to make sure I can complete the PT requirements before I go. But you should ask your recruiter.

I can’t really say much about this question, but I can at least say that if you want to get better at push ups, just basically eat better, try muscle milk (of course after exercise) and try to push yourself to the limit to get better at it. Two months isn’t really a long time, so start working! but sorry i can’t really help much…

I’ll try to answer your questions the best that I can.

Weak arms – you may have challenges/problems because you will likely have some training, where you must complete an obstacle or confidence course. Such courses test your ability to manipulate your bodyweight when negotiating obstacles – this may be challenging, but as I say below, give max effort & stay focused. Though, if you are leaving in 2 months, you may be able to make some progress with your arm strength.

Height/Weight Standards – As to weight standards all services have max height/weight standards, but also have specific bodyfat requirements, so being overweight alone is not a deal breaker. For example I am far over my weight because I lift weights religiously, but by bodyfat is far below 10%. Your recruiter should be able to answer these types of questions

Other Things To Think About – Initial training is typically easier for those who are mentally tough, quick learners & physically fit – coordination doesn’t hurt either. If you are weak in an area, give max effort and stay focused – as they will ride you hard when they spot a weakness.

I’m male so I can’t answer your female-specific questions. Though, I would remind you that thousands of women have completed the training before, so I am sure they accommodate you somehow.

    Hope this helps.

If you need to lose weight you will in basic, if you need to gain weight you will also. Its weird how it works but alot of girls in my flight lost alot of weight. I lost alot of inches but gained weight due to muscles. They will get you where you need to be. I was only able to do 14 push ups a minute without dropping to my knees but after all the yelling and pushing you to your max you will get up there. I can now do 42 push ups in a minute so that should say something. If you could at least do ten you are good, I knew a girl who could barely do one but she got recycled because she couldnt pass the 4 week PT exam.

This is going to sound nasty but you get a limited amount of time for the bathroom. I had started the day I got there and it was a mess. You’re always in a hurry and hardly have time to change. You are allowed to keep tampons/pads in something they call a satchel but cannot go every time you need to, its when they allow you which is about once every hour or every other hour. It was awful I had my period for 10 days and after that I never had it again in basic (the stress). I got it again when I went to tech school.

basic is no cakewalk. you will find alot of strengths and weaknesses you never had, but it was a positive change for me in the long run.
    Good luck
